We use the cognitive architecture ACT{R to model a simple application task domain. Using a technique we call \Task Model Tracing," we have implemented a general mechanism for enhancing direct manipulation in a simple application's user interface. The task model tracing system is a layer between the application and the user interface that anticipates and follows possible user plans and agendas. When the user requests help, the system collaboratively works with the user to complete that part of the task. We are working from the premise that pragmatics (i.e., context) has not been utilized suuciently in human-computer dialogue because programs lack user-goal models of their task domains. Further, we contend that a cognitive architecture, because it is a model of human cognition, is the appropriate framework for implementing such a task model.
